Jesus calls himself 'The Bread of Life'. It is fundamental to our understanding of who Jesus is. Throughout their sojourn in the desert the Israelites refugees from Egypt were fed daily by manna from heaven. God was known as Jehovah Jireh - the one who provides.
Recognising that it is He that is the one that sustains and fulfils us, providing us with all we need to survive and live, is vital to our relationship with God, our maker.
With Jesus proclaiming himself as the 'Bread of Life' He is stating that He is the one that be there to provide what we need. In our world of self-reliance it is sometimes hard for us to recognise that we need help. It can be difficult to realise that we cannot do it on our own and that someone else needs to step in to do it for us.
Being meek and humble enough before God and with Jesus ensures that know that we need Him. Whether that is for physical or spiritual nourishment, healing and wholeness.
Bread, of course, was and still is a staple of most diets. Saying that Jesus is the Bread of Life is laying our claim to Jesus as part of our daily diet to live and exist.
We are reminded of this in the Lord's Prayer: "Give us today our daily bread."
May Jesus be the food we need today and what we hang our dependency upon.
