Light here is synonymous with truth. Jesus came to bring light into a confusing and marred world. As God made flesh, He understood what it meant to live a life worthy of Adonai. He wanted to shed that light and truth with as many people as he could and so began his teaching.

He was a signpost to the Father, but only those able to see the light could comprehend what he was saying.

As a child I always believed in God but I didn't really understand Him. I didn't really get who Jesus was either. It as only when I had the truth revealed to me, through friends praying for me and spending time talking to me, that everything seemed brighter, clearer and lighter. I was able to see the truth that had been plainly in front of me the whole time - it seems so obvious now. But back then, it wasn't - as the saying goes, "I couldn't see the wood for the trees!"

We are called to be light to the world as we allow Jesus' own light to shine within and through us. Our actions, our thoughts, our words are to declare to the world that Jesus is the Light and through Him we can know true salvation and freedom.
