I'm not that much of a gardener, but I've lived with my parents, brother and grandparents who were. If you're trying to grow fruit it's not always easy.
First thing to note in this passage is that branches that bear no fruit must be removed whilst those that do must also undergo maintenance and be pruned. Neither the fruitful or the fruitless get away without some form of hardship.
We are commanded to remain in Jesus' love and by doing so we will bear much fruit and prove that we are His disciples. Our fruit is shown when we demonstrate His love through our words, thoughts and actions. By being part of the vine of Jesus, we take on His characteristics and demeanour. A good way of checking how we're doing with God, is whether we (and others) can see this fruit blossoming and growing in our daily lives.
Without being egotistical or boastful, consider keeping a diary of times when you have been able to show God's love for others and give thanks to God for them. When this year ends, consider what pruning has taken place and how this has benefitted you and those around you.
