In the meeting of the Samarian woman at the well, Jesus cleverly quizzes the woman about her life and why she is there in the heat of the day when most woman would have collected the water earlier in the day when it was much cooler. But this woman was ostracised by her community, likely because of her living arrangements.
She tries, with clever replies to Jesus' queries, to avoid telling Jesus the truth. But, as we've already read and understood on Monday, Jesus is the Way, the TRUTH and the Life. How many times have we tried to do this with God in our daily lives? Let's not deceive ourselves because, like the woman at the well, Jesus has time for us and is willing to listen to us.
And whether we know fully who God is, or still searching for that understanding, we can rejoice. The Samaritan woman states: "‘I know that Messiah’ (called Christ) ‘is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.’" (v.25) and Jesus openly confesses, "I, the one speaking to you – I am he."
I find it marvellous that Jesus openly admits his Christhood to this Gentile sinner. Doesn't that realisation fill you with joy, hope and amazement? He did it for her, surely, He will also do the same for me?
We should acknowledge our need of the Messiah and be willing to ask when we're not sure. This way Jesus will justify and sanctify our faith and belief through showing us the truth of His presence in our lives.
