Thur 16th Mar 2023 - Daily Reading: Numbers 7
Supporting the Workers by Becky Brooks

We read in Numbers 4 how the Lord called each clan of the Levites to take responsibility for a specific task. They were to be ready to do their tasks when it was time for the people to move forward on their journey to the Promised Land.

But what about everybody else? Did they just take care of themselves and pay no attention to the duties that the Levites were responsible for?

No. Here we see that everybody had a part to play in making sure that the Lord’s work was done. Although the majority of God’s people would have no part to play in the packing and moving of the Tabernacle, they could still contribute. They brought gifts to the Levites that would make it possible for them to do their jobs – six covered carts and 12 oxen.

For the Gershonites and the Merarites, these tools were essential. They would not be able to fulfil their task without them, but they relied on God’s people to provide them.

As we look around our Church communities, we might see people, like the clans of the Levites, with specific roles and tasks to do, and we might wonder what our part is. Here we see that those who support the workers with their generosity are just as vital as the workers themselves.

What gifts might we bring? Our teachers, leaders, evangelists, and pastors may not welcome a gift of a cart or an ox! Yet they might welcome our gifts of time, service, money, prayer or encouragement. Even if we are not in a position where we can take on a role or a task, we can still be part of God’s purposes by supporting those who are. There is a place for everyone in the purposes of God.
