Putting things right by Becky Brooks

As we read through the books of the Law, we see again and again the importance that God places on righteous relationships between his people as well as a righteous relationship with him. Here, we return again to teaching about how a person should put things right if he has wronged somebody else.

The Israelites had to maintain honourable relationships with each other if they were to have a proper relationship with the Lord. There is so much in these books about putting things right, but this teaching is not only found in the Old Testament. In Matthew 5, we see Jesus telling the people that they should not bring their gifts to the altar if they had outstanding issues with someone else. First, they should make things right with the other person, and then they should bring their offering to the Lord.

How often, when we bring our offerings of worship, or money, or time, or service to the Lord, do we check our hearts to be sure that we have nothing against one of our brothers or sisters in Christ? Before we sing our songs on Sundays, can we take a moment to forgive, or seek forgiveness if we need to?

Our relationships with one another are important to us, and to God too. If we want the Lord to accept our offering, let if be offered with a clear conscience in the knowledge that we have done what we can to live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18).
