Thur 9th Feb 2023 - Daily Reading: Leviticus 4-5:13
Sin Offerings by Becky Brooks

The opening words of this chapter are quite interesting. The sin offerings were not about deliberate wrongdoing, but about accidental slips, mistakes and unintentional errors that resulted in a person breaking any part of God’s law.

This is important. We can all agree that some acts are definitely wrong and sinful, done with full knowledge and representing a rebellion against the Lord. But God is also interested in the things we do by accident, without thinking or because of ignorance. He is also interested in the things we don’t do that we should have done. Nothing gets past him. The righteousness and holiness of God is both wonderful and terrible!

Thankfully, the Lord knows that his people will slip up, even despite the best intentions, and he has a plan for that. The people would bring a perfect, innocent substitute animal. The substitute animal would be effectively charged with the sin and take the punishment in the person’s place. God’s righteousness was satisfied.

As we read this, we can’t help but think about Jesus, a sinless, innocent man who took the punishment for our sin in our place. Praise God for his wonderful mercy and his everlasting love.
