Consuming Fire by Becky Brooks

God is compared to a “consuming fire” several times in Scripture (Deut 4:24, Heb 12:29) and, at the end of chapter 9, we saw that the glory of his presence instantly consumed the offerings. Now we see his fire consume Nadab and Abihu, who meddled in the holy things of the Lord without seeking the will of the Lord.

Fire is something that can be warming, comforting and beautiful. However, it can also be dangerous and awe-inspiring. We must treat fire with respect and proper care. We teach young children rules about fire safety not because we love rules but because we love our children and we understand the nature of fire.

So it is with the Lord. He is love, and he is grace and he is mercy. But he is also power and righteousness and majesty. If we are careless with fire, we are likely to get burned. The Lord has made possible an intimate and close relationship between him and his people, but his essential nature does not change.

Scripture tells us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10). A right understanding of God as holy, awesome and powerful is essential for all who would serve and worship him. We approach him with reverence and awe, not casually or carelessly. The freedom we have to enter his presence is a marvellous privilege, paid for by Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. May the Holy Spirit move our hearts to awe and wonder at the power and glory of our God.
