Hebrews 13
Final Instructions
The writer leaves the church with a series of instructions covering a whole range of aspects of church life and family life:
- Love one another
- Show hospitality to strangers and outsiders
- Remember those persecuted for their faith
- Honour marriage and maintain faithfulness within marriage
- Avoid materialism and the love of money and learn contentment, knowing that God is with us
- Listen to and have confidence in the church leaders
- Avoid false teaching
- Do good and share what we have
- Pray for the evangelists and ministers of the Gospel
Through this letter we have been helped to understand the basis of our faith, been shown some great examples of heroes of faith, and been encouraged to strengthen our own faith. Now we are shown the what the evidence of faith in our lives should look like – love, holiness, hospitality, purity, prayerfulness, obedience, contentment.
Through faith, we find fellowship, we submit to leadership, we share in God’s wisdom, and we are equipped to do God’s will for God’s good purposes. What Jesus has won for us is about eternity of course, but it is also about what we do and how we live now. Faith – a sure and certain hope – is the basis for an abundant life in the Lord Jesus. May our gracious God strengthen and deepen our faith today and every day.
