God invites us to ‘Come…’

The story of Noah and his family gives us the first example of God inviting humans to “Come” into the provision he has made for our preservation and salvation.

It was Noah who built the ark, but it was God who explained the need for it, provided the instructions for it, and, through creation, provided the very materials needed to make it. Then God invited Noah to “Come” into the safety, into the blessing, into the means by which God would save him from the judgement that was to come.

This invitation to “Come” is repeated many times in scripture, right through to Revelation: “And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” (Rev 22:16-17).

Judgement for sin is necessary. In fact none of us would tolerate living in a world where there were no consequences for our actions. Yet from the very beginning, the Lord has invited those who would follow him to “Come” into the place of salvation that he has designed for them.

For Noah and his family, it was the ark that would preserve them from the deluge. For us, it is Jesus, who says, “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matt 11:28).

For those who do not yet know Jesus, the invitation is clear. Yet for those who have already accepted his invitation, he still calls us to come, deeper into our relationship with him, closer in prayer and worship, and nearer in every moment. Let us answer his call.
