Thur 29th Sept 2022 - Daily Reading: Genesis 39
The Lord was with Joseph

We return today to Joseph, quickly rising to the top in Potiphar’s house. The story is very familiar and demonstrates Joseph’s own upright character. However, the passage is very clear that Joseph was so successful because the Lord was with him. This phrase is used four times in this chapter.

It is interesting that God’s blessing on Joseph not only means that Joseph prospers, but also that those in whose household he lives prosper. Both Potiphar and the jailer found that they could safely leave Joseph in charge and everything would go well.

When we are faithful to the Lord, and faithful in our work, we benefit, but so do those around us. It does not matter where we do our work. Joseph was faithful in the luxurious home of a ruler in a powerful and wealthy nation. He was also faithful in the low and sparse surroundings of a prison, when he hit rock bottom, was lied about, and unfairly treated. In both places, the favour of God spread out from him and brought positive benefits to those around him.

Jesus said, “You are the light of world.” (Matt 5:14). Wherever you go, you bring that light. If you work, live or socialise with those who do not know God, then you are the light in that situation. If you live faithfully, serve the Lord, and shine your light, then all will be illuminated by it, just as all those around Joseph benefitted from God’s blessing on him.

In your home, you can be a light among your family. In your social lives, you can be a light among your friends. At work, you can be a light to your colleagues and managers. Potiphar was very quick to recognise God at work in Joseph. When we live as lights in all circumstances, people will notice, and will see God at work in us.

This week, let us commit to be a light in the world in every circumstance.
