Thur 8th Sept 2022 - Daily Reading: Genesis 24
Faithful Servant

Who would you choose to pick a wife for your only son? A servant? Even a senior, most trusted servant? No. And neither does Abraham. Although he sends the servant on the mission, it is God that Abraham trusts to find Isaac a wife. Abraham knows that God will send his angel before the servant.

This does not mean that the servant is unimportant. Abraham needs to send somebody who he can trust will listen to God. He made the right choice. As soon as the servant arrives in the land of Abraham’s family, he prays. He commits his mission to God and asks God to direct him.

The sign that the servant asked God to show him was a good one. Camels can drink a lot of water. The woman who offered not only to draw water for the servant, but also for his camels, would be a kind and hospitable person, willing to put herself out for others. Once Abraham’s servant realised he had found ‘the one’, he bowed down and worshipped God.

Here is a man who was trusted by his master and who acted in obedience to him. He was also wise, and faithful to God, giving God the glory at the success of his mission. He had most likely proved himself to Abraham through long years of faithful service, being trusted with increasingly important tasks, until Abraham, too old to travel himself, was willing to send him on this most important of journeys.

Jesus told his disciples that whoever can be trusted with very little, can also be trusted with much (Luke 16:10). May we, as servants in God’s Kingdom, be as faithful and trustworthy as Abraham’s servant.
