Moses and Aaron’s first two meetings with Pharaoh do not go well. Pharaoh was not only the king of Egypt but was also seen as a god. No wonder he felt threatened when Moses and Aaron asked him to allow the people to go and worship God. The very idea that the Hebrew slaves might worship a God other than Pharaoh, and worse, a God that Pharaoh had never even heard of, was a huge threat to Pharaoh’s sovereignty.
Pharaoh was arrogant and over-confident. “Who is the Lord?” he said, dismissing the Lord God with a throwaway remark. He was also cruel, punishing all the Hebrews because of Moses and Aaron’s request.
God is more than prepared to answer Pharaoh’s question, whether Pharaoh wants and answer or not. Who is the Lord? He is the sovereign, almighty God, and Pharaoh is just a man. God will demonstrate his sovereignty not only to Pharaoh, but to all of Egypt.
When God’s people start doing God’s will, they do not always get an easy ride. There may be opposition, mockery and even, as with Pharaoh, cruelty. Yet, through it all, God remains sovereign.
Pharaoh had to learn that lesson in the hardest possible way. May we, as God’s people, be more open and willing to acknowledge the greatness and power of the Lord.
