We have seen the description of the central part of the Tabernacle – the Holy of Holies – and the Holy Place that was separated from the Holy of Holies by the veil.
Now we move further out, to the courtyard that surrounded the central, holy parts of the Tabernacle. The courtyard was where the people of God would meet to worship, pray and hear from the Lord. It was still surrounded by a curtain, but the curtain was much lower – this was the part of the Tabernacle that was available to all the people.
The layout of the Tabernacle shows us something about the priorities of God and how he wanted his people to approach him. As the people entered the courtyard, the first thing they would see would be the altar where sacrifices were made. God expects his people to approach him in a sacrificial way, prepared to lay everything down before him.
The next thing they would see would be the washing basin where Aaron and the priests would wash themselves before entering the tent. God expects his people to be purified and cleansed before they meet with him.
Let us thank and praise God, then, that he has provided us with both the sacrifice and the cleansing through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ!
