Jethro’s father-in-law was probably a follower of God before meeting up with Moses and God’s people in the desert. When Moses first met him back in Exodus 2, he was described as a ‘priest of Midian’ and he was also referred to as ‘Reuel’, a name meaning ‘friend of God’, so this is not a conversion story.
However, it is a reminder that the word of our testimony is a powerful thing. In fact, the word of our testimony is so powerful that it can overcome the enemy (Revelation 12:11). On this occasion, the word of Moses’ testimony provokes a powerful reaction in Jethro.
First, he is delighted. Hearing about the wonderful things that God has done brings delight and joy to a believer. Second, he praises God, declaring that the Lord is greater than all other gods. Thirdly, he makes an offering, giving something of his own to the Lord. Finally, he sits in fellowship with all the elders of Israel as they eat a meal together in God’s presence.
Jethro may not have become a new believer by hearing Moses’ testimony of God’s goodness, but the experience certainly strengthened his faith, lifted his spirit, brought him closer to the Lord and closer to the other believers.
When we share our testimonies and tell other believers of the goodness of God in our lives, then we are not only obeying the Lord by declaring his glory, but we are also blessing those who hear. Let us be ready and willing to have a story of God’s goodness to share at all time.
