Thur 10th Nov 2022 - Daily Reading: Exodus 15:1-21
Conquering Lord

The song of praise that the people broke into after their deliverance focuses on the Lord and acknowledges his superiority over all other gods that he has so clearly demonstrated by his actions on behalf of his people.

It’s the start of a new understanding of the Lord by his people. For the first time, they understand God as not only Lord, but also as a warrior God battling on their behalf. God’s people have won a great military victory over the Egyptians, not by their own strength, but by the Lord’s actions.

The second part of the song looks forward to the blessing that God has promised. God’s actions at the Red Sea have given his people a new understanding and a hope that, by God’s hand, they will be able to take the promised land and settle there. This will be God’s doing, and the military weakness of his people will not be a factor.

So often, God tells his people to remember what he has done for them. This is just as important for us today as it was during the Exodus. When we remember all that the Lord has done, it prompts us both to worship, as God’s people did here, and also to look forward in confidence towards the promised hope and blessing of God.

Every day is a good day to give thanks to the Lord for what he has done in the past. Not only does it mean we give him the praise that he is due, but it also deepens and strengthens our trust in him for what is to come in the future.
