Tue 31st Jan 2023 - Daily Reading: 2 Timothy 1
Stand Strong by Becky Brooks

This second letter from Paul to Timothy was written while Paul was in prison in Rome and Timothy was in Ephesus. Times were hard for Christians. The Roman Emperor Nero had blamed Christians for a huge fire that destroyed parts of the city of Rome, and some Christian believers and leaders had started to keep a low profile to avoid persecution.

So, Paul’s letter to Timothy was at least partly an encouragement to stay strong in the face of all the trouble that was around. When Paul tells Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God” and to “not be ashamed” of his testimony, this is not just general advice. Knowing that Christians were facing trouble everywhere, Paul was reminding Timothy that it is more important than ever that he should stand firm.

Paul also knows that they were living in a time when staying true to the gospel could be a risky business, and he doesn’t hide that from Timothy. In fact, he invites Timothy to join him in his suffering. And Paul knew about suffering. Not only was he in prison, but he had also been deserted and abandoned by many friends and Christians in the province of Asia.

Times of suffering and trouble are a test for every Christian. Some will fall away. Paul does not want that for Timothy. Jesus does not want that for any of us. Whatever you are facing today, know that God has entrusted you with his magnificent gospel, and blessed you with his gifts. You do not face any of the trials of life alone.
